Zoology is offered as a compulsory module in the Bachelor's degree programme Biosciences. We teach the fundamentals of morphology, physiology and systematics of the entire animal kingdom in lectures and practical courses. Excursions are also part of this module. In addition, zoology is the focus of two elective modules: the module Phylogeny & Evolution (B16) covers the basics of evolutionary theory and fossil history (including human evolution), and in the module Biodiversity & Natur Conservation (B17), the zoological focus is on the local habitats and their protection.
In the Master's degree programmes, zoology is particularly represented in Integrative Zoology (IZoo). Here, our working group's specialisations are represented in the elective area: Evolutionary Morphology of Marin Invertebrates, Evolutionary Morphology of Arthropoda, Local Fauna and Taxonomy, Fish Biology and Evolutionary Developmental Biology of Vertebrates. The module Evolutionary Morphology of Marine Invertebrates, which traditionally takes place at a marine biology station on the Swedish Gullmarsfjord, is also part of the Master's degree programme Marine Biology. The „Evolutionary Morphology of Arthropoda“ provides insights and practical experience in high-end techniques such as micro-computed tomography, confocal laser scanning microscopy and computer-aided 3D reconstruction (more details under Reasearch). The module Tasks at Natural History Museums integrates the Zoological Collection Rostock into the teaching programme by allowing students to design their own special exhibition based on the contents of the existing collection.
